The judiciary and legal community are preparing to bid farewell to one of their most respected figures, Justice Rita Agyeman-Budu, who passed away in July 2025 at the age of 64.
Her burial and memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the United Church, Teshie-Nungua Estate, following a series of commemorative events that began on November 19.
Born on September 19, 1960, in Kumasi, Justice Agyeman-Budu’s life was marked by resilience, academic excellence, and unwavering dedication to public service.
Before joining the bench, she pursued a career in journalism and social entrepreneurship, roles that shaped her deep understanding of social issues and justice.
These early experiences paved the way for her distinguished career in Ghana’s Judicial Service, where she rose from District Magistrate to Circuit Court Judge and ultimately to Justice of the High Court.
Colleagues remember Justice Agyeman-Budu for her integrity, fairness, and compassion.
She was instrumental in advancing judicial reforms, particularly in gender-based violence courts in Accra and Kumasi, earning a reputation as a pioneering advocate for women’s rights within the legal system. Her commitment to mentorship and staff development also left a lasting imprint on the judiciary.
Beyond national borders, Justice Agyeman-Budu played a significant role in shaping discussions on justice for women through her involvement with the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ). Rising from Assistant Secretary to President of the Ghana Chapter, she influenced policy and practice on both national and continental levels.
Her advocacy extended into the arts, with her 2014 drama, A Call for Justice, adapted into a nationally broadcast film highlighting critical social issues.
She is survived by her husband, the former ECG Managing Director,
Kwame Agyeman-Budu, their three children, grandchildren, siblings, and a wide network of professional and personal associates.
