Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Suhum constituency in the Eastern Region, has raised concerns about the growing opioid abuse in Ghana, warning that the country is on the verge of a silent epidemic that threatens its future.

Speaking at the 2025 Odwira Festival, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe urged increased stakeholder participation in eradicating the problem.

“We must protect our youngsters from opioid and substance abuse. We can solve this by organizing a stakeholders’ task force to address these issues,” he stated.

He emphasized the MP’s Health Education Program train, which has already visited places like Osafohene Atiemo, Ayekotse, Nankese, and Newtown, with plans to expand the program throughout all electoral areas.

The MP also contributed financially to the festivities, while expressing his gratitude for the community’s trust and reiterating his commitment to their welfare.

The Paramount Chief, Osaberima Ayeh Kofi Opare I, called for prayers and active participation in municipal activities, highlighting the significance of Odwira in building togetherness, conserving customs, and promoting social cohesion.

The event drew prominent political and traditional personalities, emphasizing its dual role as a cultural and development platform. The celebration, which is still a cornerstone of cultural heritage in the Eastern Region, included traditional ceremonies, vivid drumming, dancing, and displays that emphasized the Suhum people’s diverse character.
