Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has voiced strong criticism of Ruben Amorim’s handling of Kobbie Mainoo, insisting that the 20‑year‑old academy graduate is being wasted at Old Trafford.

Despite Mainoo’s breakthrough last season, which included scoring in the FA Cup final and playing in the Euro 2024 final, he has been restricted to just 171 minutes of Premier League football this campaign, all from substitute appearances. Scholes dismissed Amorim’s claims that Mainoo is considered a starter as “bull****,” pointing out that the youngster has been consistently overlooked even when United have struggled to control games.

Scholes’ frustration stems from his belief that United are failing to nurture one of their brightest home‑grown talents. He admitted that he “hates seeing home‑grown players leave,” but argued that in Mainoo’s case, “enough is enough.”

The former English midfielder accused Amorim of ruining the player’s development by keeping him on the bench, noting that the team’s lack of midfield control makes the decision even more baffling. For Scholes, the situation reflects a wider problem at United, where promising academy players are not given the trust or responsibility to grow into first‑team leaders.

Mainoo himself is reportedly desperate to leave in January, with at least 12 clubs across Europe ready to offer him regular playing time. Napoli, who had a loan request rejected in the summer, remains keen, while other top sides are monitoring his situation closely.

Scholes believes that a move away from Old Trafford, even temporarily, could reignite Mainoo’s career and strengthen his chances of returning to the England squad ahead of the World Cup. The lack of minutes under Amorim has already damaged his international prospects, and Scholes sees a loan or permanent exit as the only realistic solution.

Ultimately, Scholes’ comments highlight the tension between Manchester United’s tradition of promoting youth and the current reality under Amorim. While the club prides itself on developing academy stars, Mainoo’s stagnation is a warning sign that the pathway is being blocked.

For Scholes, the choice is clear: if United cannot guarantee him meaningful opportunities, then Mainoo must leave to protect his career.

His words carry weight not only as a club legend but also as someone who understands the importance of nurturing young talent in a competitive environment.
