The global film industry has been thrown into shock following the discovery of acclaimed Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, dead in their Los Angeles residence, prompting a full-scale homicide investigation by authorities.

Police and firefighters were called to the couple’s home on Sunday afternoon in Brentwood, an affluent neighbourhood known for housing several high-profile figures, after receiving a medical emergency alert at about 3:38pm local time.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

While officers did not immediately confirm the identities, family representatives later issued a statement acknowledging the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, describing the loss as sudden and devastating.

“We are heartbroken by this sudden loss and ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the family said.

Robbery-homicide detectives from the LAPD responded to the scene and have since opened a homicide investigation. However, police said no arrests have been made, and no suspect or person of interest is currently being sought.

At a late-night press briefing, Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton declined to provide details about possible injuries, the presence of a weapon, or the circumstances surrounding the deaths, stating that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office would determine the official cause of death.

More than six hours after the initial emergency call, both bodies were still inside the house as investigations continued.

Tributes have poured in from across the United States and beyond, reflecting Reiner’s towering influence on American film and television. California Governor Gavin Newsom described Reiner as a “big-hearted genius” whose storytelling helped define generations of cinema lovers.

Former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama also expressed deep sorrow, praising Reiner not only for his creative achievements but for his lifelong commitment to social justice, equality and belief in the goodness of people.

Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, began his career in the 1960s before rising to prominence in the 1970s as “Meathead” on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, a role that earned him two Emmy Awards.

He later transitioned behind the camera, directing the cult classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, in which he also appeared as filmmaker Marty DiBergi.

Over the next decade, Reiner directed a string of critically and commercially successful films, including Stand By Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Misery (1990) and A Few Good Men (1992), the latter earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

He also co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, a production company that became a powerhouse in film and television.

Just months before his death, Reiner reunited with the Spinal Tap cast for the long-awaited sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, released in September.

Michele Reiner, an actress, producer and accomplished photographer, was also a creative force in her own right.

She owned and ran Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company, and was known for her work in the arts as well as her advocacy for childhood development and LGBTQ+ causes.

The couple married in 1989 and had three children together. Reiner was previously married to actress and director Penny Marshall and is the adoptive father of her daughter, actress Tracy Reiner.
