The Africa Cup of Nations has been held every two years since its inception in 1957. Already, 34 editions have been played, with the imminent 2025 AFCON to be the 35th edition.

On the eve of the 2025 AFCON to be played in Morocco, the president of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, confirmed that the competition will now be played every four years instead of the usual two.

The Confederation of African football and European football have been at loggerheads since the early 2000s because of the timing of the competition, as it is always played in the middle of the season.

Pressure has been mounted on CAF to change the time, and they have finally succumbed to the demands of the Europeans.

The first edition of the four-year format will commence in 2028.

In addition to the four-year AFCON, CAF announced a new competition named the African Nations League, which will begin in 2029.

The 2027 AFCON will be the last one to be played in the two-year format. East African nations Uganda, kenya and Tanzania will host the 36th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

It is unknown which nation will host the maiden edition of the four-year format.
