A tragic on-set accident has claimed the life of renowned Nollywood special effects and pyrotechnics artist James Akaie, following a gas-related explosion during the production of a movie in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The incident, which occurred as filming was nearing completion, has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s film industry and reignited concerns about safety standards on movie sets.

The death was confirmed over the weekend by film producer and director James Abinibi, who described Akaie as a gifted and deeply passionate professional whose work helped redefine visual realism in contemporary Nollywood films.

According to Abinibi, the explosion happened in a designated effects preparation area located outside the main filming location.

Akaie was reportedly conducting an unauthorised pyrotechnic simulation involving a gas cylinder, assisted by two aides, when the explosion occurred.

Akaie sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

His two assistants also suffered burns in the incident and were transferred to a specialist medical facility for treatment.

Abinibi said both survivors are in stable condition and continue to receive medical care.

Well respected within the industry, James Akaie built a reputation for excellence through his work on several high-profile Nollywood productions.

His credits include acclaimed titles such as “Mai Martaba,” “The Night of June 7th,” “Dark October,” and “Ireke,” where his special effects makeup and pyrotechnic designs added depth and realism to storytelling.

Colleagues have often praised his innovative approach and commitment to elevating production quality in Nigerian cinema.

In his statement, Abinibi noted that the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with relevant authorities already conducting a thorough inquiry.

He added that the production team is fully cooperating with investigators while also carrying out an internal review to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Out of respect for Akaie’s family and the ongoing investigations, no further operational details have been disclosed.

The death of James Akaie marks a significant loss for Nollywood’s growing technical community, particularly in the specialised field of special effects and pyrotechnics, which has gained increasing prominence as the industry expands its global reach.
