The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a formal review into incidents that marred the closing stages of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal, describing the conduct of some players and officials as “unacceptable”.

In an official statement released hours after Senegal’s dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory in Rabat, CAF said it was reviewing all available footage from the match and would refer the matter to the appropriate disciplinary bodies.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal,” the statement said.

The governing body stressed that it takes a firm stance against any conduct that undermines the integrity of the game, particularly actions directed at match officials or organisers.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers,” it added.

The final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium was already laden with tension, decided deep into extra time after a controversial penalty incident late in regulation time and a decisive strike from Senegal’s Pape Gueye.

Scenes following those moments led to heated exchanges on the pitch, briefly overshadowing what had been billed as the showpiece occasion of African football.

CAF did not name individuals or specify potential sanctions but made clear that disciplinary action could follow.

“CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty,” the statement concluded.

The confederation’s intervention comes as AFCON 2025 draws to a close, with Senegal lifting their second continental title but the final also leaving behind questions about discipline and behaviour on the biggest stage of African football.
