Security agencies and key stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have reaffirmed their readiness ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, following a high-level coordination meeting aimed at guaranteeing a peaceful and credible internal election.

The joint stakeholder meeting brought together the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee, the Ghana Police Service, and the Electoral Commission (EC), alongside representatives of the party’s national executive body and accredited representatives of the various presidential aspirants.

The engagement formed part of broader efforts to align logistics, security, and electoral procedures as the party prepares to elect a flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections next week Saturday.

Discussions at the meeting focused primarily on security arrangements at polling centres nationwide, coordination between party officials and law enforcement officers, and the role of the Electoral Commission in ensuring compliance with established electoral standards.

Stakeholders also reviewed operational timelines and contingency measures designed to prevent disruptions and safeguard the integrity of the voting process.

Addressing participants, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno gave firm assurances that the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to provide comprehensive security before, during, and after the primary.

He stressed that the police will deploy adequate personnel across all voting centres and hotspots, with a clear mandate to maintain law and order and respond swiftly to any emerging incidents.

The IGP expressed confidence that, with cooperation from all parties, the primary would be conducted without violence or intimidation.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, with participants commending the level of coordination already achieved between the party, security agencies, and the EC.

The Electoral Commission, which is providing technical support to the NPP for the exercise, reiterated its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and adherence to electoral best practices.

Representatives of the presidential aspirants welcomed the assurances given and expressed satisfaction with the work of the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee so far.

Many acknowledged that the committee’s handling of the process—from vetting to logistics and stakeholder engagement—has helped build confidence among contestants and their supporters.

The NPP’s internal elections have historically attracted intense interest and competition, given the party’s strong national presence and its record of producing presidents through closely contested primaries.

The Party leaders at the meeting noted that lessons from previous internal contests, as well as national elections, had informed current preparations, particularly in the areas of security coordination and dispute resolution.

In reaffirming the party’s commitment, officials of the NPP said every effort is being made to uphold democratic values and ensure that the January 31 primaries are free, fair, transparent, and credible.

They also appealed to delegates and supporters of all aspirants to conduct themselves peacefully and respect the rules governing the process.

With security agencies on alert, stakeholders aligned, and logistical preparations nearing completion, the stage is set for what party leaders hope will be a smooth and incident-free presidential primary that strengthens internal democracy and unity within the NPP.
