The chances of local players getting an opportunity to play for the Black Stars are less than 5%. Selections and comments from the national team coaches in recent years suggest that you need to play outside Ghana to get a dream call-up to the Black Stars.

Preparations towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup are underway with Otto Addo and his technical team deciding on who and who should be on the plane to the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Winfred Schafer, 2002 AFCON-winning coach, who is currently the technical advisor for the Black Stars, has advised the locally based players to work hard to earn a spot in the team for the imminent 2026 World Cup.

In an interview with Medeama FM, the veteran tactician said, “Over the past two months. I have been visiting league venues and speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper.

“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe. I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars.”

Many Ghanaians see Schafer’s comment as false because locally based players have not been given enough chance to play in the national team.

Hearts of Oak’s number one goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, is the only one who has been trusted to be part of the team.
