Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025–26 season, as officially confirmed by the club on Tuesday.

Despite signing a contract extension in April 2025 that was intended to keep him at Anfield until 2027, the 33-year-old forward has reached a mutual agreement with the club to bring his nine-year tenure to an early close.

Salah shared the news in a personal video message, describing the decision as the “first part of my farewell” and expressing profound gratitude to the fans and the city that he says have become a permanent part of his life.

The Egyptian international departs as one of the most decorated and prolific players in Liverpool’s history. Since joining AS Roma in 2017, he has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, placing him third on the club’s all-time leading goalscorers list.

During his stay, he helped secure eight major trophies, including two Premier League titles and the 2019 Champions League.

His legacy includes four Premier League Golden Boots and a reputation for remarkable consistency that redefined the club’s modern era.

While his departure marks the end of an era, the current season has been described as “tumultuous” for the winger, featuring reported tensions with head coach Arne Slot and a dip in his usual goal-scoring output.

Interest from the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer remains high as potential next destinations, though Salah has emphasised that his immediate focus is on finishing the campaign strongly with Liverpool.

The club plans to hold a full celebration of his achievements later in the year to properly bid farewell to their “Egyptian King”.

Mohamed Salah’s farewell message

“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life,” Salah added in his farewell message. “Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not of this club.

“I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates, past and present. And to the fans, I don’t have enough words.

“The support you showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.”

“I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies, and we fought together through the hardest time in our lives.

“Leaving is never easy. You [the fans] gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home, to my family, and to me. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”
