The ‘no bed syndrome’ has existed for far too long in Ghana. The crisis continues to lead to the loss of many lives every day, yet nothing shows that it is ending anytime soon.

Patients are normally returned to where they were referred from by doctors due to a lack of adequate beds’

The no bed syndrome has become a huge topic in the Ghanaian media recently, with the populace demanding an end to it because it is so shameful and unacceptable at this age.

In an interview on Joy News, the Deputy Medical Director of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr Yaw Opare Larbi, discussed the true state of affairs at the hospital.

“What happens in Korle Bu is no different from what happens in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), but I will say that sometimes our situation is even worse… we are under more pressure,” said Dr Larbi.

His revelation is shocking because the belief out there is that Korlebu Teaching Hospital is lacking in facilities and is under more pressure than the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

He continued, “Because in Komfo Anokye, it is the only tertiary facility in the Ashanti region, and also for quite a big distance.”

“And we receive referrals from about 12, sometimes we even say 13 regions of Ghana, apart from our own people in the city of Kumasi and the Ashanti region,” Dr Yaw Opare concluded.

The no bed syndrome is tarnishing the image of Ghana, and the earlier the authorities solve it for once, the better it will be for everyone.
