England and Uruguay played out a disjointed 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium on Friday night in a friendly match that served as a key audition for fringe players ahead of the World Cup.

England manager Thomas Tuchel fielded an experimental side, handing senior debuts to goalkeeper James Trafford and midfielder James Garner, while senior stars watched from the sidelines.

The first half was a largely flat affair with few clear-cut opportunities, as England’s heavily rotated XI struggled to find rhythm against Marcelo Bielsa’s well-disciplined and physical Uruguay side.

The match’s main talking point was the dramatic return of Arsenal defender Ben White, who made his first international appearance in four years.

Introduced as a second-half substitute to a mixture of cheers and boos from the home crowd, White appeared to have secured a victory for England when he poked home from a corner in the 81st minute.

His first international goal briefly shifted the mood in a stadium that had grown restless with a performance lacking clinical edge, despite England’s dominance of possession.

However, White’s heroics were short-lived as he became the central figure in a late VAR controversy. In the 94th minute, he was adjudged to have fouled Federico Viñas in the box, leading to a stoppage-time penalty.

Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde made no mistake from the spot, thumping the ball past Trafford to ensure the visitors left with a draw.

While England extended their unbeaten run, the match left Tuchel with plenty to ponder regarding his defensive depth and the team’s overall cohesion.
