Nine people, including eight students and one teacher, were killed on Wednesday when a 14-year-old student opened fire at the Ayser Çalık Secondary School in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey.

The shooter, identified as an eighth-grade pupil, reportedly brought five firearms and seven magazines hidden in his backpack.

According to officials from ABC News, the attacker entered two classrooms and fired randomly before taking his own life, marking the deadliest school shooting in Turkey’s history.

This tragic event was the second school shooting in the country in just two days. On Tuesday, April 14, an 18-year-old former student armed with a shotgun wounded at least 16 people at a vocational high school in Siverek, Şanlıurfa province, before killing himself.

Reports from CNN indicate that these back-to-back attacks have shocked a nation where school shootings were previously considered extremely rare.

The Turkish government has launched a comprehensive investigation, with the Justice Ministry assigning seven prosecutors to the Kahramanmaraş case.

Authorities have detained the latest shooter’s father, a retired police officer, on suspicion that his service weapons were used in the attack.

In response to the escalating violence, major teacher unions such as Eğitim-İş and Eğitim-Sen have announced a three-day nationwide strike to protest the lack of security measures in educational institutions.
