A state of shock and mourning has engulfed the Ayanfuri Traditional Area in the Central Region following the tragic death of Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmratehene of Ayanfuri, after an accidental gun discharge during a funeral ceremony on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
According to police reports, the incident occurred during the funeral rites of the late Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwarteng, where mourners had gathered to pay their final respects. In the course of the ceremony, a pump-action gun reportedly discharged accidentally, fatally injuring the chief.
Nana Kwabena Okyere sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency treatment.
However, he was pronounced dead while receiving medical attention.
His body has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary as police begin investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The unfortunate development has thrown the community into grief, with residents and traditional authorities expressing disbelief over the sudden loss.
