Rapper Stormzy is set to produce a “hard-hitting” biopic based on the life of Arsenal and England football legend Ian Wright through his company, #Merky Films.
Announced in May 2026, the film will chronicle Wright’s extraordinary journey from a challenging upbringing in South London to becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated footballers and broadcasters.
Stormzy, who will act as executive producer, praised Wright for transcending football and inspiring generations through his resilience and character.
The biopic, written and directed by Tom Wilton, will explore the complexities of Wright’s life, including childhood trauma, early rejections from professional clubs, and his late entry into professional football at age 22.
It will highlight the pivotal role played by his schoolteacher, Sydney Pigden, in encouraging him to believe in himself despite difficult circumstances.
Wright has expressed that the film will bring together the various, often untold, aspects of his life, showcasing both the “raw and real” struggles and the ultimate triumphs
This project marks a significant step for #Merky Films, aiming to present a story that goes beyond sports to touch on themes of family, community, and overcoming the odds.
The production, which has been in development with talks underway with studios, is intended to highlight how Wright’s journey remains relevant to modern British culture.
Wright, who was awarded an OBE in 2023, hopes the film provides “hope and joy” while revealing a side of his life that many have not seen
