Many expected England to smash lowly New Zealand into pieces in their penultimate international friendly game ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Thomas Tuchel’s side looked completely not up to the standard required, as they were not sharp when they played against the Oceanians.
A header from skipper Harry Kane on the stroke of half-time made the difference. The attacking trio of Rashford, Watkins and Kane did not show much understanding, forcing fans to criticise the head coach.
The German tactician, after the game, was not very pleased about the performance of his team, revealing his frustrations.
“I’m OK with it. I’m not super-happy about it. I like the second half more than the first half. We played more from our positions, and that’s why we played with more speed and off the ball we played with a bit more bite. The first half we were out of positions, and it was a bit too much freestyle.
He continued, “That slowed our game down and made it difficult for the counterpress because we were not in the positions that we wanted to be when we started attacking. That’s basically the story of the match.”
The expectations on the Three Lions are huge because of their recent performances in major tournaments. England has reached three semi-finals and a quarter-final in the last four major tournaments.
The performance on Saturday night against New Zealand has been facing criticism in the English media.
England in Group L will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama, where they are expected to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament.
