Canada through Jonathan David defeated 10 men Peru 1-0 in matchday two of the tournament.

Miguel Araujo of Portland Timbers received a straight red card after a contentious challenge with Mario Escobar sending him off in the 59th minute.

Peru was the better of the two sides until the red card with Canada taking advantage of the situation.

Lille’s Jonathan David kept his cool and took a low shot which ricocheted in off the left post in the 74th minute to give Canada the lead.

The goal was so important for Jesse Marsch who recorded his first win in a competitive game for Canada. The Canadians sit second in Group A with a final fixture against Chile set to determine who qualifies for the knockout phase.

In the other game of the group, Lautaro Martinez struck late in the game to help Argentina beat Chile 1-0. Argentina against Chile in Copa America will always be a tough game due to Chile’s back-to-back wins of the trophy over Argentina in 2015 and 2016.

Argentina has progressed to the knockout stage with a game to spare while Chile will need to beat Canada to stand any chance to progress.
