Colombia booked their place in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging past Ghana 1-0 in a tense Round of 32 clash at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday night in Kansas City, with Jhon Arias netting the only goal of the game in the 14th minute.

Played in sweltering conditions with temperatures around 88 degrees Fahrenheit and a heat index of 96, the match was disrupted early when both sides were forced into changes after injuries to Colombia’s Jhon Córdoba and Ghana’s Marvin Senaya, marking the first time in World Cup history that both teams had made substitutions before the 15th minute.

The change proved decisive for Colombia. Córdoba’s replacement, Luis Suárez, curled in a cross from the right that an unmarked Arias guided home to give the South Americans the lead.

Colombia should have extended their advantage before the break. Luis Díaz struck just wide from a fast counter-attack, Suárez headed narrowly off target, and a Johan Mojica header was brilliantly clawed away by Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi.

Just before the hour mark, Colombia thought they had doubled their lead when Díaz converted a cross from Jefferson Lerma, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Ghana, who struggled to assert themselves throughout, could not find a way back into the game.

The Black Stars failed to register a single shot in the entire 90 minutes, finishing with an expected-goals value of just 0.26 compared to Colombia’s 2.18.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz acknowledged his side had been outplayed for spells, describing it as a tough, intense contest in which Colombia set the early pace with speed and sharp passing.

The result continues a difficult recent history for Ghana against South American opposition at the World Cup. Colombia, meanwhile, have now advanced to the knockout stages in three straight tournament appearances.

Nestor Lorenzo’s side reached the quarter-finals at Brazil 2014 and the last 16 in 2018, and will look to build on that momentum against Switzerland.

Colombia will next face Switzerland in the round of 16 in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 7, with a quarter-final spot on the line against either Argentina or Egypt.
