Ghanaian businessman and socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has suffered another major legal setback after the Accra High Court dismissed his emergency application seeking to halt his extradition to the United States over his alleged involvement in a multi-million-dollar international fraud scheme.

The latest ruling strengthens the legal process initiated by Ghanaian authorities following an extradition request from the United States and clears the way for the businessman to be transferred to American authorities once all remaining legal procedures have been completed.

The emergency application was filed by Abu Trica’s legal team shortly after the High Court dismissed an earlier application challenging the decision of the Gbese District Court, which had authorised his extradition.

His lawyers argued that the extradition process should be temporarily suspended to allow the court to consider what they described as procedural concerns surrounding the case.

They further maintained that urgent judicial intervention was necessary before any transfer to the United States could proceed.

However, the High Court rejected the application, ruling that the extradition process should continue, thereby dealing another blow to the businessman, who has consistently fought attempts to have him extradited since his arrest.

The latest decision follows an earlier judgment delivered on July 2, 2026, when the High Court dismissed Abu Trica’s application for an order of certiorari. In that application, he sought to overturn the ruling of the Gbese District Court approving his extradition to the United States.

With both applications now dismissed, the legal obstacles preventing his extradition have been significantly reduced, leaving Ghanaian authorities in a stronger position to complete the transfer process in accordance with the extradition laws.

Abu Trica is wanted by authorities in the United States on allegations of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in connection with an alleged international romance fraud syndicate.

According to investigators in the United States, the alleged criminal network is accused of defrauding elderly victims of more than US$8 million through elaborate online romance scams.

Prosecutors claim members of the network allegedly created fake identities on various online platforms to establish romantic relationships with unsuspecting victims before convincing them to transfer large sums of money under false pretences.

The alleged scheme is also said to have involved fabricated inheritance claims and other deceptive stories designed to persuade victims to release funds.

United States authorities believe the operation formed part of a broader international fraud network that targeted vulnerable individuals across multiple jurisdictions.

Abu Trica was arrested in Ghana in December 2025 after American authorities formally requested his extradition through diplomatic and legal channels.

Following his arrest, he was granted GH¢30 million bail while his lawyers challenged the extradition proceedings before the Ghanaian courts.

Since then, the businessman has pursued several legal avenues in an attempt to stop his transfer to the United States, arguing that aspects of the extradition process required judicial review.

However, successive court rulings have continued to favour the extradition process, with the latest High Court decision representing another significant defeat for his legal team.
