Ghana’s Sports Minister Kofi Adams says he will not get involved in decisions over the future of the Black Stars’ coaching staff following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

Queiroz stepped down as Ghana coach after the team’s disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

The Portuguese coach’s exit has left Ghana facing fresh questions over who will take charge of the Black Stars, with their hopes of reaching the next AFCON finals under pressure following defeats by Ivory Coast and Gambia.

But Mr Adams says responsibility for appointing or removing coaches does not fall within his role.

“I don’t hire coaches, and I don’t fire coaches,” Mr Adams said in an interview with Joy FM.

“You can direct your questions about the firing of the coach to the body that needs to [address it].”

The comments come at a difficult time for the four-time African champions, who have struggled for consistency in recent months.

Ghana have won only one of their last eight matches in all competitions and have not recorded a victory in an AFCON qualifying match since September 2023.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to face growing pressure to decide on the team’s next coach as the qualifying campaign continues.

For the Black Stars, the immediate priority will be to revive their campaign and keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 AFCON tournament.
