Turkey are fighters when it comes to European football. They haven’t won any major trophy, they are not as flamboyant as Spain, they are not serial winners like Germany and Italy but they can make you feel like you played against any of these big boys.

In March 2024, Austria thrashed Turkey 6-1 in Vienna in a friendly game causing many Turkish journalists to question the tactics and approach of Vincenzo Montella.

The Italian tactician assured rhem of good times and the good times were suddenly soon here with them. In four games played so far in Germany, Turkey has won three and lost just one.

At the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Turkey won 2-1 against the impressive Austria with Al-Ahli center-back channeling his inner Sergio Ramos to score twice. Turkey took a commanding lead after Demiral’s second goal through a thumping header from corner kick.

30-year-old Freiburg forward Micheal Gregoritsch reduced the deficit to 2-1 for Austria but it was too late for them. Ralph Rangnick’s Austria pilled immense pressure on Turkey but they remained resolute and protected their lead.

Head coach Vincenzo Montella praised Turkish heart and spirit after the incredible achievement.

Turkey will play against Netherlands on Saturday in the game 4 of the quarter-finals.
