Mozambique President Daniel Chapo has become the focus of online discussion after a photograph of him shaking hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin spread widely on social media.
The image was taken at the Russia–Africa Summit, where the two leaders were shown exchanging a formal handshake. However, it was the striking difference in their height that prompted much of the interest surrounding the photograph.
Chapo is reported to be about 6 feet 8 inches tall, making him Africa’s tallest sitting president.
Born on January 6, 1977, Chapo is a lawyer and jurist. He became Mozambique’s head of state on January 15, 2025, after previously serving as governor of Inhambane Province from 2016 to 2024.
He was also Secretary-General of FRELIMO, Mozambique’s ruling political party, and its presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
According to documents sighted by GhanaWeb, Chapo is not only the tallest serving president in Africa but was also the first FRELIMO presidential candidate to have been born after Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975.
Chapo is married to Gueta Selemane Chapo, and the couple have four children.
The photograph emerged as several African heads of state travelled to Moscow at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin for the 3rd Russia–Africa Summit.
