History was made at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Sunday in Villeneuve with debutant South Sudan showing an incredible fighting spirit to beat Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico won 28-22 in the 1st Quarter with everything pointing to a good day for the North Americans.

In the middle of the second quarter, Puerto Rico was 40-31 ahead of the Africans. With 6 points difference ahead at the end of the 2nd Quarter, The Puerto Ricans went into the break leading.

South Sudan took over early in the 3rd Quarter after scoring 9 points with Puerto Rico having no antidote to that run. South Sudan never looked back and continued with their momentum by ending the quarter leading by 2 points.

4th Quarter proved to be the best quarter for South Sudan after enjoying 9 points lead. South Sudan ended the game by 90-79 points.

South Sudan had warned everyone competing in the Basketball in the Paris 2024 with a fine display against USA that saw them lost by a point in the practice match before the tournament.

The victory is historic as it is their debut at the Olympic Games.

Jones, Shayok, Kuol, Omot and Jok were the five top leading scorers for South Sudan with Jones leading with 19.

Juba will be in a party mood after the incredible win for the East Africans.

South Sudan’s men’s basketball team, the ‘Bright Stars‘, made history becoming only the 1st African country to win basketball  game at the Olympics since 1996.

South Sudan  is the youngest country in the world  having officially started their basketball team only in 2011.
