Former Real Madrid and Portugal defender Pepe has announced his retirement from football.

Kepler Laveran de Lima Ferreira a.k.a Pepe, 41, has decided to end it all after 22 years of professional football.

Born in Mario in Brazil, Pepe moved to Maritimo in Portugal in 2001 from Corinthians Aragoano. He joined FC Porto in 2004 and three seasons later joined Real Madrid where he spent a whopping 10 years.

After a successful decade in Madrid where he won three UCL titles, he moved to Besiktas and returned to Porto after just a year stint in Turkey (2017-18). Pepe spent 5 years at Porto in his second coming and has finally quit football.

The Brazillian-born represented Portugal from 2007 to 2024 and was part of the team that won Euro 2016 in France. The talented center-back won 141 caps for the Selecao.

In a news that has gotten the football world talking, Pepe’s formal teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo via Instagram thanked him for the memories.

“There are not enough words to express how much you mean to me, my friend. We won everything there was to win on the field, but the greatest achievement is the friendship and respect I have for you. You’re unique, my brother. Thank you for everything,” Ronald wrote on IG.
