Antoine Griezzman has retired from international football At age 33. The Atletico Madrid star made 137 appearances for France, scoring 44 goals. He played an integral roll in France’s victory in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, converting a penalty in the final as France won Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.
He also won the 2021 Nations League with Les Blues.
No one saw this comig because he still looks good playing for France even though he had his worst tournament for Les Blues in Euro 2024.
“It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolour adventure and see you soon,” he said.
“After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation.
“Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege,” Griezzman said on Social Media.
The coach of the French national team talked about knowing Griezzman’s plans on retirement.
“We’ve had a long discussion about [his retirement] recently,” said Deschamps. “Since his debut in the France team 10 years ago we’ve had a relationship based on trust and frankness.
“Even if his club career is not over, Antoine will remain a monument of French football, one of the greatest players in its history.
“It was often said that he was my favourite. We indeed had built a very strong relationship, that will remain intact. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything, Grizou.”
French skipper Kylian Mbappe praised Grizi, “one of the most important players of the modern era in our selection”.
“Thank you for the unforgettable memories you gave us, you supported this team for years and greatly contributed to bringing it to the top with numerous titles.
“I will never forget the honour and pleasure it was to play alongside you for so many years,” the Teal Madrid forward added.
Griezzman’s retirement is a very big lost to France because he has been the first name on Deschamps team list since Euro 2016. He scored 6 goals and won the top scorer in the tournament they hosted and finished as runner up.
