Many connoisseurs of the game believe it will take years before the FIFA v FIFPRO and European Leagues battle could be resolved.

On Monday, the worldwide footballers’ union (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels, known as FIFPro) and the European Leagues (37 domestic leagues) jointly filed an antitrust complaint against FIFA at the European Commission- the primary executive arm of the European Union in Brussels.

The two argue global football’s governing body (FIFA) is abusing its right as both a tournament organiser and regulator by neglecting them in decision making when it comes to the introduction of new competitions.

The FIFA Club World Cup has been confirmed to take place in 2025 Summer with most of the 32 teams not in support of the timing especially those from Europe.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be competed by 48 teams: meaning 16 additional teams will be added to the 32 that played in Qatar 2022.

UEFA has introduced a new format in the inter-club competitions (UCL,UEL,CL) adding to the Nations League. These are all testament to the fact that there are so many games on the calendar which the footballers believe will go a long way to affect their physique and psyche.

Players are suffering career-damaging injuries recently. Real Madrid in the last 18 months has seen Thibaut Courtoise, Eder Militao and David Alaba suffered ACL.

Manchester City’s Rodri who boldly hinted on players planning to embark on strike because of so many games is out with ACL for the rest of the seaon.

Torino’s Zapata, among so many other players have also suffered the same injury and other serious injuries with many pointing to the mind-blowing number of games on the calendar.

It has become a norm for players to play a competitive game every 72hrs. The battle will go on for a while before a final decision is made.
