Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag after a disappointing start to the season.
The club’s recent 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday, which left them 14th in the Premier League with only three wins in nine matches, marked Ten Hag’s final game in charge.
United’s struggles extend to European competition, where they currently sit 21st out of 36 in the Europa League table, having drawn their first three group-stage games.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined United as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, will take over as interim manager.
The club confirmed Van Nistelrooy’s appointment and noted he will lead the team while they search for a permanent head coach.
Club sources indicate that the decision to dismiss Ten Hag was difficult but unanimous. Ten Hag was notified by the board on Monday morning.
Despite having his contract extended following United’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May, his tenure was cut short due to United’s rocky start to the season—their second worst in Premier League history.
The club now faces the task of finding a sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, as they aim to stabilize and rejuvenate their campaign.
