Manchester United have officially named Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.

The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, who will transition to Old Trafford from Sporting CP in Lisbon on November 11, has signed a contract that will keep him with the club until June 2027.

Following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been serving as interim manager and will remain in charge for the club’s next three fixtures. Amorim will be United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

In a statement, United expressed high expectations, calling Amorim “one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.” Sporting CP also confirmed the agreement, noting that United paid €11 million (£9.25 million) to activate Amorim’s release clause.

Amorim’s first match at the helm of United is scheduled for November 24 against newly promoted Ipswich Town in the Premier League, following the international break.

His first home match will be in the Europa League on November 28, facing Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt, followed by a Premier League fixture against Everton.

The club will announce Amorim’s full coaching staff at a later date.

Amorim’s recent run with Sporting has been impressive, maintaining a 14-match unbeaten streak after a Super Cup loss to Porto on August 3.

He will lead Sporting for two final games before his departure: a league match against Estrela on Friday and a Champions League showdown with Manchester City on Tuesday.

His last game with Sporting will be against Braga on November 10, ahead of the Nations League break.
