Ex-head coach of Ghana, Otto Addo,  has shared his experience and expectations of the Black Stars ahead of the 2023 AFCON.

Speaking to GTV Sports +, the former Black Stars midfielder shared his opinion on Ghana’s chances of ending the 41-year drought for the coveted AFCON trophy.

“Everything is possible just as I said, it is very important to take it step-by-step.

“Nowadays there are no weak teams, everybody can defend which makes it very difficult for Ghana and the first step is to qualify for the next stage, that is, to survive the group stage- to finish as best as possible and maybe get easier opponents in the following round.

“I think if Ghana starts to win in the group stage, anything is possible,  added the former Black Stars coach.

The 48-year-old who was the head coach for Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup shared his experience at a major tournament.

“It’s like I said, step-by-step and it is a young team that comes together. It is not easy to put all the things together at these championships (AFCON), anything can happen.

“There’s no weak team anymore. You have to earn your wins very hard. Once we get a good start, it makes the following games easier”, said Otto Addo.

Otto Addo urged the team to take it easy and think about game after game.

“Step-by-step thinking is far better. If you are aiming too far away, it is difficult to fulfil them because you have to work on a daily basis.

“You have to train hard, you have to win each game and the rest will come.

“It doesn’t make sense to think always about the cup or whatever, you have to do your homework first.

“There is some work you have to put in to survive the group stage and go to the next stage and at the end to win it, it is so much work, added the former Black Stars coach.

Otto Addo advised the team to have the right mentality during the tournament. He said, “A lot of mentalities- right thinking in every moment. Even if you have to win it, you have to know that you have to work harder to maintain this level so my advice is they should think from game to game”.

Otto Addo urged the fans of Black Stars to lower their expectations.

“They shouldn’t think too far because each game has its own character”. Ghana has not won the Africa Cup of Nations since 1982 and football fans in the country are willing to see the trophy once again.

In a group with Cape Verde, Egypt and Mozambique, the Black Stars are expected to qualify for the knockout phase of the tournament which kicks off on 13th January and ends on 11th February.
