Sudan looked so great until Salaheddin Alhassan was shown a second yellow card to give the Algerians a numerical advantage. Riyad Mahrez had been beautifully set up by Hicham Boudaoui as the veteran forward calmly slotted the ball home to give Algeria an early lead in the third minute.

Sudan was so in the game and squandered many chances to level the scores. The Desert Foxes survived the Sudanese scare and completely took over soon after the East Africans were shown a red card.

It was not until the 60th minute that Algeria capitalised on the numerical advantage, when Amoura assisted Mahrez to score Algeria’s second goal.

With just five minutes left on the clock, Ibrahim Maza rounded up a fine afternoon as he scored his first goal for Algeria to make it 3-0.

Earlier on, Burkina Faso defeated Equatorial Guinea 2-1 at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca. Equatorial Guinea defender Basilio Ndong was shown a red card after 50 minutes. His sending off gave the Burkinabes a huge advantage, but went down to Anieboh’s goal in the 85th minute. Burkina Faso was shocked and equalised through Minoubgou’s 95th minute equalizer. Edmund Tapsoba in the 98th minute snatched the winner for Burkina Faso as they won 2-1 to commence their campaign in a grandstyle.
