Nigeria secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria in a match that showcased their tactical nous and attacking danger innthe third quarter-finals of the ongoing AFCON 2025.
Nigeria imposed themselves on the game right from the opening whistle, pressing high up the pitch and forcing Algeria to sit right in their own half.
Their midfield trio of Ndidi, Onyeka and Iwobi were too good for the Fennec Foxes as they controlled possession, dictated the tempo and ensured that the North Africans struggled to find their usual rhythm.
After a dominant first half from Nigeria, the breakthrough came in the second half when Bruno Onyemaechi’s sumptuous cross was headed in by Osimhen in the 47th minute.
The goal silenced the numerous Algerian fans in the stadium, with the few Nigerian fans roaring in celebration.
The Super Eagles doubled their lead in the 57th minute after Iwobi’s defence-splitting pass was calmly controlled by Osimhen, who unselfishly rolled it to Akor Adams. Adams wonderfully dribbled past goalkeeper Zidane and slotted the ball into an empty net. It was all over for Algeria, which had failed to threaten Nigeria in any way.
Nigeria’s dominance continued as they prevented the Algerians from getting back into the game.
Nigeria qualified for a record 16th semi-finals in AFCON history. The Super Eagles will face host nation Morocco in a game which promises to be feisty and cagey, considering the performances of the two nations.
