African School Games 2025: OWASS honours trio with GHC1,000 each

The 2025 African School Games was hosted by Algeria across four cities to promote youth development, identify emerging talents and uphold Olympique values.

Over 3000 young athletes from 47 countries across the continent participated in various sporting disciplines.

Ghana was represented where the athletes dazzled in Badminton, Boxing, Basketball, Taekwondo and Table Tennis.

Five gold medals were won in Badminton, and bronze medals were won in table tennis.

Opoku Oware School awards three students

Michael Mensah won bronze in table tennis for Ghana. The OWASS student was awarded a sum of GHC1,000 for his wonderful effort.

Mohammed Masawudu, who was part of Ghana’s basketball team, received GHC1,000.

Cyrus Ankom, who was part of Ghana’s soccer team, was also awarded GHC1,000.

The maiden edition of the African School Games received fantastic reviews from organisers and the various media across the continent.

Nigeria will host the second edition in 2027, with Kenya ready to welcome the continent in 2029.

 

Medals won by Team Ghana

Ghana won 14 medals in total. Badminton, Table Tennis, Boxing, and Athletics were the disciplines in which Ghana won.

 

Gold Medal Wins

Girls Doubles (Badminton): Adu Moslena, Ama Korama and Quarcoo Racheal claimed the top prize with a dominant display.

Mixed Doubles (Badminton): The pair of Adu-Mintah Obapomba and Adu Moslena Ama Korama proved too strong for the competition.

 

Silver Medal Wins

Boys Doubles (Badminton): Adu Melchizedek Takyi and Adu-Mintah Obapomba finished second.

Boys Flyweight (Boxing, 50kg): Laryea William impressed en route to silver.

Boys Lightweight (Boxing, 60kg): Ablorh Abdul Rahman also earned silver after a spirited campaign.

 

Bronze Medal Wins

Boys Singles (Badminton): Obapomba Adu-Mintah added to Ghana’s medal tally.

Badminton Relay Event: Team Ghana picked up bronze in the team relay.

Table Tennis: Mensah Michael Agyapong secured bronze in the boys’ singles.

Basketball (3×3): Ghana’s team grabbed bronze in a competitive field.

Boxing (Light Flyweight, 48kg): Ofori Richardson fought his way to a bronze medal.

Taekwondo (-55kg Girls): Jessica Mensah earned a spot on the podium.
