Akon, the well-known international music artist whose full name is Aliaume Akon Thiam, is facing the end of his 29-year marriage after his wife, Tomeka Thiam, submitted a divorce petition earlier this week.
Reports indicate that Tomeka listed irreconcilable differences as the reason for divorce in court documents submitted in Fulton County, Georgia, on September 11, 2025.
Court records indicate that Tomeka is requesting joint custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
However, she has also requested that the court award her primary physical custody, while granting Akon visitation rights.
She requested spousal support in her divorce filing from the musician and asked the court to deny any spousal support to the singer of “Lonely.”
The couple has not yet made any public statements regarding the divorce since news of its filing emerged.
People reported that Akon, 51, has previously expressed his views on polygamy in public discussions.
In a 2022 interview on ‘The Zeze Mills Show,’ Akon disclosed that he has nine children. The Senegalese-American singer linked his belief in polygamy to his African cultural background and described the practice as so common and normal.
“Polygamy is part of our culture. Absolutely. To me, it looks normal because it’s part of our culture.
“We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. See, the flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account”, the Mr Loney hitmaker, added.
“My job ain’t to be doing all that extra stuff and these holidays and recitals. While I’m taking care of my responsibility to make sure the family has a roof over their head and food, if I have the time to do that and show love, yes, I will do that,” he explained.
“Me showing up for my children is me being there for them financially. I’m there if I’m around. But it’s impossible to be everywhere and every place. And technology allows me to be there every day, FaceTime and other methods”, he continued. In a relationship with his children, Akon praised technology for helping him stay in touch with them always.
Akon, since the early 2000s, has been a big name in world music. He has worked with Grade A artists like Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, DJ Khaled, T Pian and many other artists.
