The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern Region has sent a strong signal of preparedness and cohesion ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election, following a massive Unity Walk held in the constituency on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Thousands March for Party Unity

The walk, which drew thousands of supporters, was spearheaded by the Eastern Regional Chairman of the party, Jeff Konadu Addo, and attended by all regional executives

They were joined by the National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, constituency executives, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives, and a large number of grassroots members and sympathizers.

Clad in party colors and carrying placards, participants chanted slogans reaffirming their loyalty to the NPP.

The carnival-like atmosphere demonstrated the party’s ability to rally its base and project a united front in what is expected to be a fiercely contested by-election.

Solomon Kwame Asumadu Endorsed

The central theme of the Unity Walk was the collective endorsement of the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia by-election, Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

The endorsement was notable because it brought together all former aspirants and key stakeholders who had previously expressed interest in contesting the seat.

In a symbolic gesture, these party figures walked side by side with Asumadu, signaling that individual ambitions had been set aside in favor of a common goal — retaining the seat for the NPP.

“What we are witnessing today is a party that is united behind its candidate. Akwatia has spoken with one voice,” the regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu declared during the rally.

Background to the By-Election

The Akwatia by-election was triggered following the death of the NPP MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Akwatia seat has alternated between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in previous elections.

The NPP’s strong showing in the 2016 and 2024 polls has emboldened the party to work towards consolidating its hold on the constituency.

However, the NDC has also expressed confidence in reclaiming the seat, making the by-election a crucial test of both parties’ strength.

Unity as a Campaign Strategy

The Akwatia Unity Walk was not only a display of solidarity but also a strategic move to reassure constituents that the NPP is going into the by-election without internal divisions.

“This election is not about individuals; it is about the future of Akwatia and the NPP’s vision for the constituency,” said one constituency executive during his address.

“We are here to show the people that with Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the NPP remains their best choice.”

Looking Ahead to September 2

With just over two weeks to the polls, the NPP believes the momentum from the Unity Walk will translate into electoral victory.

The Eastern Regional Executive Committee has expressed optimism that the overwhelming show of support has “left no doubt in the minds of constituents and observers” that Akwatia is firmly behind the party’s candidate.

The by-election is scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, and is expected to be closely monitored at both regional and national levels.
