After 18 good months as the manager of the Saudi PRO League side Al-Ettifaq, former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has ended his union with the Middle East club.

“I want to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the fans, and everyone involved for the opportunity and the support during my time here,” said Gerrad in a thank you message.

“From the first day, I was warmly welcomed, and I have enjoyed the chance to work in a new country with a different culture. So overall, I have learnt a lot, and it’s been a positive experience personally and for my family as well. But football is unpredictable and sometimes things don’t go the way we want,” Steven Gerrard added.

Al-Etiffaq sits 12th in the 18-team league, where they have won 19 points from 17 games. The club sits just 5 points above the relegation zone.

Reports from Britain say that Gerrard misses home and it is the main reason why he has left the club, while reports from Saudi Arabia say the club decided to sack him because they felt they would face a real relegation fight.

Steven Gerrard was sacked by Aston Villa after a successful spell with Scottish side Rangers before joining Al-Etiffaq.
