The Ashanti Regional Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as “tribal and divisive remarks” made by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante Boateng, against certain groups within the party.

In a statement signed by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Secretary of the Ashanti Regional Caucus, the group said it has taken “strong exception” to the MP’s alleged comments that Ashantis “historically used slaves for war” and that “their descendants are not entitled to leadership or positions of authority within the party.”

The Caucus described such remarks as deeply offensive, stressing that they run contrary to the NPP’s founding principles of unity, equality, and inclusivity.

Background

Kwaku Asante Boateng’s comments have sparked outrage both within and outside the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region — a traditional stronghold of the ruling party.

The MP reportedly made the remarks while addressing a local political gathering in Asante Akim South on October 31, 2025, insinuating that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who hails from the North East Region, was “an outsider” and “a slave brought to serve.”

The comments quickly went viral after being aired by Joy News, drawing condemnation from civil society groups, religious leaders, and members of the NPP leadership.

This latest backlash follows a similar statement issued earlier by the NPP National Secretariat, which disassociated the party from Asante Boateng’s comments and reaffirmed its commitment to equality and respect for all Ghanaians, regardless of ethnicity or background.

Ashanti Caucus Denounces Divisive Politics

The Ashanti Regional Caucus, representing one of the party’s most influential regional blocs, said it was disturbed by the remarks, warning that such rhetoric threatens the unity and stability that have long been the NPP’s strength.

“The comments are deeply offensive and run contrary to the spirit of unity, respect, and equality that the NPP stands for. The Ashanti Regional Caucus completely disassociates itself from this narrative and condemns it in no uncertain terms,” the statement read.

The Caucus emphasized that the NPP is a merit-based and inclusive party, where leadership is earned through service, loyalty, and dedication—not through lineage, tribe, or religious identity.

“Ours is a Party that welcomes and rewards merit, loyalty, and service, and not lineage, tribe, or religious identity. Every member, regardless of origin or background, has an equal right to aspire to any position within the Party or in national leadership,” the statement affirmed.

Upholding NPP’s Democratic Tradition

The Ashanti Caucus reminded members that the NPP’s history and values are grounded in the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, which champions democracy, liberty, and equality of opportunity.

It noted that the Ashanti Region — often referred to as the bedrock of the NPP — rejects any attempt to use ethnicity, history, or identity to divide the party.

“The Ashanti Region, as the bedrock of the NPP, rejects any attempt to use history, tribe, or identity to divide our ranks or to question the belonging of any loyal member,” the statement said, cautioning that such utterances “undermine the unity and cohesion that have been the foundation of our Party’s success.”

A Call For Discipline

Drawing parallels with global democratic norms, the Caucus stressed that mature political organizations act decisively against utterances that inflame ethnic or religious divisions. It therefore called on NPP members, especially those in leadership, to exercise restraint, decorum, and discipline in their public statements.

“As a democratic institution, the NPP must uphold that same standard of discipline, mutual respect, and responsibility in speech and conduct,” it stated.

The Caucus concluded by reaffirming its commitment to national unity, peace, and inclusivity, urging all party members to focus on strengthening the NPP ahead of the crucial 2025 general elections.

“Our focus must remain on strengthening the NPP and advancing the collective progress of our party and nation at large. The Ashanti Regional NPP Caucus stands firmly for a united Party and a united Ghana,” it declared.
