Spanish giants FC Barcelona has confirmed via an instagram post that their legends will visit Ghana for a friendly match. The news did not state the exact opponent they will play against but rumours are saying it will be against Ghana’s old XI on 10 November 2024 at 5 pm in Oseikrom, the capital of Ashanti Region at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Barcelona announced that the game will be played in honour of the famous Baba Yara, a former popular Ghanaian footballer who tragically lost his life at 32.
Who is Baba Yara
The legendary Baba Yara Sports Stadium was named after the great Baba Yara whose legacy remains unmatched even though he died tragically at age 32 through accident.
Born on 12th October 1936 in Kintampo and died on 5th May 1969 in Accra after quiting football at 26 due to motor collision suffered at Kpeva in the Volta Region while returning to Accra from a game with Real Republicans.
Popularly known as the “king of Wingers”, Baba Yara was a unique football talent who has been praised via all meida houses across the globe as one of the pionners of football across Africa.
Originally named Osman Seidu Maada and earned the name Baba Yara from his beloved mum, the fomer winger was cherished world wide. He spent 5 years (1954-1961) with Asante Kotoko before switching to play for DR Kwame Nkrumah’s Real Republicans (1961-1963) under the great Ohene Djan’s leadership.
Why was Kumasi chosen as the venue?
Barcelona chose the Baba Yara Stadium for the historic game to honour the legendary winger who the Kumasi Sports Stadium is named after. Also, the stadium is an iconic one after hosting series of major international games; including AFCON’s and some of the famous African club competitions before the 21st century.
