Ex-Black Stars’ head coach, James Kwesi Appiah, has called for the hierarchy of the senior national team to handle the captaincy brouhaha with proper care.

In an interview on LUV FM, the Sudanese head coach said, “I am hoping that what I have heard is true, that they’re trying to sort out the captaincy issue. If there are other issues, I hope they resolve them, but you know I’m not with the team, so it’s not everything that I know.”

During the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Ghanaians spotted that there were so many issues that led to the poor performances of the team aside from the fighting over the captaincy. The rumoured rift among the playing body and the lack of trust towards the head coach led to Ghana missing the tournament to be played in Morocco in December 2025 and January 2026.

Kwesi Appiah continued, “If they’re able to sort the captaincy issue, then it’s okay, because the players we have are quality, and then we make sure there’s no division in the team.

“Without unity, we cannot achieve anything, so I hope and pray that Ghana will qualify for the World Cup,” Kwesi Appiah concluded.

Ghana will play against Chad and Madagascar in rounds 5 and 6 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the 3rd and 4th weeks of March.

A lot of changes have been made to the technical department of the Black Stars as a lot is expected by fans in 2025.
