The training camp of the Ghana Black Stars in Vienna, Austria, experienced a robbery shortly before their international friendly match against the Austrian national team.
The event occurred at the hotel where the team was staying, as two players found that their luxury Rolex watches, totaling $20,000 in value, had been stolen from their rooms.
The next day, a member of the technical staff discovered that $2,250 in cash was also missing from the camp.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Black Stars Management Committee have officially engaged local law enforcement to look into the theft.
The investigation has encountered challenges because hotel management stated that their CCTV surveillance system was not working during the time of the reported break-in.
Although the hotel has denied that there was any forced entry, the police in Vienna are actively trying to identify the individuals responsible for the missing valuables.
Head coach Otto Addo and the team continue to concentrate on their upcoming task at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, despite the recent troubling events that have impacted their preparations.
The match against Austria on March 27, 2026, and the following game against Germany in Stuttgart on March 30 are important evaluations for the team’s preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The team intends to stay focused on their work while they adjust their strategies before heading out for their upcoming important match.
Ghana’s Sports Ministers’ official statement
“They are working to carry out the investigation. The initial report we have is that the CCTV was not functioning, and the police are checking when it stopped working and who was responsible for the hotel’s surveillance system at that time,” Kofi Adams said.
