The game was described as Neymar V Coutinho because two of Brazil’s finest in recent years were going to face each other.
Neymar is the captain of Santos, whilst Coutinho leads Vasco Da Gama.
Santos’ return to the Brazilian top flight has not been as successful as the club expected, especially with the signing of Neymar ahead of the start of the season, to be competing for the top six, but they are nowhere to be found in the table.
Santos had beaten Juventude and Cruzeiro in their last two games when facing Vasco. They were in high spirits but were disintegrated by the unpredictable Vasco.
Lucas Piton’s 18th-minute strike helped the away side take a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Nothing showed that Neymar and company were going to collapse in the second half, but the unexpected happened, and they conceded four goals in ten minutes, from the 52nd minute to the 62nd minute.
Santos were 5-0 down with 28 minutes to at least end the game. Tche Tche, in the 68th minute, finished off Santos with the sixth goal.
After the game, Neymar was captured weeping uncontrollably because he and his teammates had let down the club and the fans.
“I’m ashamed,” said Neymar, who was in tears as he left the pitch. “I’m totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence. But if they want to curse and insult, they’re in their right. To sum up our attitude on the field, it was terrible.
“I’ve never experienced this in my life. The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can’t help in every way.”
“It’s a shame to play like that wearing the Santos jersey,” Neymar said. “Everyone needs to lie their head on their pillow and think about what they want to do. Because with today’s attitude, if we do what we did on the field, I don’t think we even need to show up on Wednesday”, Neymar said.
Santos sit two places above the relegation zone, having won 21 points from a possible 57. Vasco, on the other hand, sit in a place above the relegation zone with 19 points won from 18 games.
Both clubs are expected to battle for relegation in the Brazilian Serie A Betano, considering their recent inconsistent performances.
