Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has passed away.

The renowned gospel icon, who is best known as the founder and leader of the celebrated gospel group Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, passed away after battling ill health for several years.

His passing comes barely a month after the death of Maame Tiwaa, a key pillar of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, whose demise deeply affected the group and the wider gospel music community.

Details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain scanty as, at the time of filing this report, the family and management are yet to issue an official statement.

Yaw Sarpong is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of contemporary Akan gospel music in Ghana.

Over the decades, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo produced several iconic gospel songs, including “Wo Haw Ne Sen,” “Tie Obiaa,” “Aduro Yesu,” and “Awurade Kasa,” many of which remain staples in churches across Ghana and continue to minister to worshippers.

In recognition of his immense contribution to Ghanaian music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
