After years of delays and dashed hopes, the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium project is receiving a new lease of life, thanks to a firm commitment by the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, who has pledged to ensure its completion within the next four months.

During a site inspection on Monday, Dr Acheampong announced that construction work on the long-abandoned stadium is being expedited to provide local football teams and sports enthusiasts in the Kwahu area with a home venue that meets national standards.

His intervention comes after persistent calls by residents and sports stakeholders for the government to complete the long-stalled facility.

The Nkawkaw Stadium, once a beacon of sporting promise in the Eastern Region, fell into neglect over the years despite several high-level commitments.

Originally earmarked as a flagship project under the Middle Belt Development Authority and technically under the ownership of the National Sports Authority, the stadium remained incomplete, leaving local teams without a standard pitch for home matches.

“We heard the pleas of the people of Nkawkaw. That’s why we’re intervening to ensure they have a pitch to play their matches—especially as we enter a new football season,” Bryan Acheampong stated.

The MP noted that the pitch has already been developed to meet Ghana Football Association (GFA) standards—measuring 105 by 68 metres, the same as the Accra Sports Stadium.

On completion, the stadium will feature a 3,000-seat spectator stand and dressing rooms currently under construction.

Existing infrastructure, such as boreholes and access ramps, has accelerated the implementation timeline.

Dr Acheampong disclosed that the GFA had recently reviewed the architectural designs and submitted technical recommendations.

“We’ll revise the drawings accordingly and work closely with both the National Sports Authority and the GFA to ensure the facility meets all required standards,” he assured.

He further explained that the four-month timeline is realistic, given that much of the groundwork has already been done.

The goal is to have the stadium ready in time for the upcoming football season, allowing Nkawkaw-based clubs to host matches locally.

The project’s revival is expected to boost sports development in the region, support talent discovery, and promote community involvement in athletics and recreation.

Beyond football, the facility will also serve as a multipurpose venue for other sporting and community events.

The renewed momentum follows years of frustration

In March 2021, the Kwahu Dadiehene, Nana Agyemang Badu, publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on the stadium.

Earlier in 2020, the NPP government announced a ₵27 million multi-sport complex for the site, but the project stalled due to budgetary and administrative delays.

Now, with Bryan Acheampong’s hands-on involvement and political backing, expectations are once again rising.

If completed within the promised timeframe, the Nkawkaw Stadium will not only fulfil a long-held dream for residents but also become a key sports hub in the Eastern Region.

The MP’s pledge adds to his growing profile as a development-focused lawmaker, with several ongoing infrastructure projects under his watch across the Kwahu bloc.
