The Dombo family, one of the most historically significant political families associated with the Danquah–Busia–Dombo tradition, has publicly disowned media reports suggesting it has thrown its support behind New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong, describing the claims as false, misleading and inconsistent with its long-held position.

In a strongly worded clarification issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the family reacted to a banner headline published by The Chronicle newspaper which read, “DOMBO FAMILY BACKS BRYAN.”

According to the family, the publication created an erroneous impression that it had endorsed the Abetifi Member of Parliament in the run-up to the NPP’s January 31, 2026 flagbearer election.

The family categorically stated that at no point has it declared support for Dr. Acheampong’s presidential bid, stressing that the headline did not reflect its publicly stated views, convictions or political values. It described the report as a misrepresentation that risks misleading party faithful and the wider public at a critical moment in the party’s internal democratic process.

Providing historical and political context, the Dombo family reminded the public that its political interventions have traditionally been guided by principle rather than expediency. Rooted in the legacy of the late S.D. Dombo—one of the founding figures of Ghana’s liberal democratic tradition—the family said its engagement in national politics has always centered on leadership defined by vision, integrity, intellectual rigor and commitment to national development.

Against this backdrop, the family reaffirmed that its support in the ongoing NPP flagbearer race lies firmly with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. It explained that this position has been openly and consistently expressed, based on what it described as Dr. Bawumia’s intellectual depth, resilience and record in shaping policy debates on economic management, digital transformation and public sector reform.

According to the statement, the family’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia is neither personal nor transactional, but a deliberate and reasoned choice informed by a belief in leadership that prioritizes ideas over spectacle and substance over noise.

The family argued that Dr. Bawumia’s calm disposition under pressure, respect for democratic institutions and ability to translate complex policy ideas into practical national solutions distinguish him at a time when the NPP is seeking renewal and strategic repositioning.

The statement further situated the endorsement within the broader ideological history of the party, noting that Dr. Bawumia represents the inclusive and national outlook upon which the NPP was founded.

At a moment when the party must reconnect with its grassroots, broaden its appeal and inspire a new generation of supporters, the family said his leadership offers credibility, continuity of values and a unifying vision rather than division.

In addressing the controversial headline, the Dombo family cautioned against the use of long-standing family names and political legacies for what it termed “transient political narratives or sensational headlines.” It stressed that its name and history are not available for speculation or political convenience, and insisted that responsible journalism requires accuracy, context and verification, especially when reporting on matters involving legacy families and national political discourse.

The family therefore formally called on The Chronicle to correct the misrepresentation and urged media organizations to exercise greater editorial care as the NPP’s internal contest intensifies.

It emphasised that democratic culture depends on truth, fairness, and fidelity to facts, not assumptions or conjecture.

Signed by Tracy Rabiatu Dombo and Alexandra Dombo Tenadu, the statement concluded by reaffirming the family’s commitment to contributing constructively to national conversations that elevate ideas, values and the long-term future. It emphasised that the clarification was issued in good faith and solely to set the public record straight.
