What began as a festive New Year celebration turned tragic in the early hours of January 1, 2026, when a church bus crashed into a crowd participating in a street float at Assin Dansame, leaving two people dead and more than ten others injured.
The bus, conveying members of the Believers Worship Center A.K.A Second Chance , was en route from a 31st Night crossover service in Kumasi to Breman Anwhiem in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District when the fatal incident occurred.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the vehicle rammed into revellers who had gathered on the street as part of the float activities.
Two victims — a 21-year-old apprentice and a student of the Sunyani Technical University — died instantly at the scene.
Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities across the region for emergency medical care.
The crash sparked anger among residents, particularly some youth in the area, who vandalised the bus moments after the incident.
Police officers were quickly deployed to the scene to contain the situation and restore calm.
Confirming the incident, the Central North Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), ASP Wonder Lumor, said investigations are underway to establish the circumstances leading to the crash.
Authorities have appealed for calm as inquiries continue, while the community mourns a tragic start to the New Year.
