37-year-old Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets has announced that he will retire from football at the end of the season in the Major League Soccer in the USA.

The Inter Miami midfielder joined the Miami-based club soon after he departed Barcelona in 2023.

The midfielder, after many years of success in Spain for Barcelona, has been in the USA for two years, where he is in the same dressing room with former teammates: Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.

In a statement, he said:

“I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of,” Busquets said in a video posted on social media.

“I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful. Thank you all very much, see you soon,” Busquets said.

The Spanish midfielder was part of Spain’s teams that won the 2012 European Championship and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Inter Miami midfielder won 32 major honours in 18 years at Barcelona, including nine La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.

He made 143 appearances for Spain and was part of the side that won the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship.
