CK Akunnor enjoyed a decade long with the Black Stars culminating in captaining the side. Between 2019 and 2020, Akunnor was the deputy head coach for the Black Stars. Between 2020-2021, C.K Akunnor was appointed as the main head coach of the Black Stars after serving as the deputy a year earlier.

Speaking to JoySports after Ghana’s disastrous 2-1 defeat to Niger, CK Akunnor said, ”As a coach, you draw the list of players you want to use based on what you want to do. Other members of the FA would also bring their views on board, but it was sometimes uncomfortable.
I understand they have to look into it and that football is not done by one person. However, in my case, it wasn’t a situation where we were working together”, C.K Akunnor.

It has been rumoured that not only Black Stars coaches make selections for the team but also the president and the EXCO members play a key role. They all want their players to be called up to the team.

From the words of the former coach, it is clear that the interest of the leaders of the Ghana Football Association prevents the coaches from working to their satisfaction.

Ghana has failed to qualify for the AFCON for the first time since 2004.
