Al Ahly’s last defeat was in round four of the group stage of the 2022-23 season when they were pulverized 5-2 by Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfield Stadium in Pretoria.
The Red Devils lost to Peter Shalulile’s brace, a goal each from Marcello Allende, Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena on 11th March 2023.
It took them an incredible 22 months before tasting another defeat. Two titles have been won by Al Ahly since the embarrassing defeat in South Africa.
Belouizdad, on the night, could not afford anything apart from victory. The Algerians needed to prove a point after the 6-1 humiliation suffered just last week in Cairo.
Defeating Al Ahly is not just for any club as Belouizdad has joined the few teams that have been able to defeat Marcel Koller’s side recently in the CAF Champions League. It was their first-ever win over the defending champions.
The Algerians showed a huge mentality by making it clear that they needed the three points after putting Al Ahly under pressure most of the time.
When Al Ahly thought they were returning home with a point, Belouizdad knocked them out with a 91st-minute goal.
Naoufel Khacef had the easiest job to do after Egyptian number 1 goalkeeper El Shenawy had failed to save a shot from outside the 18-yard box. He just tapped in to give Belouizdad a wonderful 1-0 win which can help them qualify to the quarter-finals.
The Algerians now sit second having won 6 points. They have a point behind leaders Al Ahly and a point above third-place Orlando Pirates, who host Stade d’Abidjan on Saturday afternoon at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.
