Round 4 of the CAF Confederation Cup was played on Sunday across the length and breadth of the continent. Algerian side Constantine broke Angolan side Bravos do Maquis into pieces. In Constantine in Algeria, Constantine won 4-0 with Rebia and Omoyele putting the Algerians in a 2-0 lead before the end of the first half. Belhocini and Mouaki scored late in the game to condemn the Angolans to a disastrous 4-0 defeat.
Three-time winners of the competition, CS Sfaxien, lost 1-0 at home in Sfax to Simba SC. Surprisingly, the Tunisians have lost all four games played in the group stages. Mathematically, Sfaxien is out of the group stages after Constantine and Simba have each won 9 points. Bravos do Maquis has 6 points in third on the table.
Group B
RS Berkane became the first side to qualify for the knockout stage after securing an impressive 1-0 victory over Stade Malien in Bamako. Imad Riahi’s 64th-minute strike made the difference. Berkane has amassed an incredible 12 points making them one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
Andre De Jong’s second-half brace ensured a 2-0 victory for Stellenbosch over CD Lunda Sul of Angola. The South Africans are second and will have to fend off the threat from Stade Malien for the final slot of the group.
Group C
Asec Mimosas in Abidjan drew 1-1 against USM Alger. Salifou Diarrassouba opened the scoring in the 31st minute for Asec Abidjan. Benmazouz cancelled the lead in the 71st minute to snatch a point for the Algerians.
Jaraaf in Senegal pipped Orapa United from Botswana 1-0 through Mathew Fall’s 98th-minute strike. The win has helped the Senegalese side to move to third on the table with 5 points same as second-placed Asec Mimosas. USM have won 8 points and a win in any of their last two games will send them to the quarter finals. Orapa is languishing at the bottom of the log having won just 2 points from four games. Qualification is now a difficult task for the Batswani side.
Group D
Al Masry drew goalless against the defending champions Zamalek in the all-Egypiant affairs.
Enyimba recorded their first win of the season with an emphatic 4-1 win over Black Bulls of Mozambique. Joseph Atule scored a brace for the Nigerians with veteran Brown Ideye scoring on his African debut for Enyimba. The group is very tight as only four points separate the leaders Zamalek (8 points) and bottom-placed Enyimba. Al Masry in second has five points, and Black Bull and Enyimba have 4 points each in third and fourth places.
