Veron Mosengo-Omba, the General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), officially resigned on Sunday, March 29, 2025, amid a deepening crisis within the organisation.
While Mosengo-Omba framed his departure as a retirement to pursue “personal projects” after 30 years in football administration, his exit follows intense pressure and public outcry over the handling of the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
The 66-year-old Swiss-Congolese official had also faced criticism for remaining in office three years past CAF’s mandatory retirement age of 63.
The resignation is largely seen as fallout from the controversial decision to strip Senegal of its 2025 AFCON title and award it to Morocco.
During the final in early 2026, Senegalese players staged a 17-minute walk-off in protest after Morocco was awarded a stoppage-time penalty.
Although Senegal eventually won the match in extra time, CAF’s appeals board later ruled they had forfeited the game, prompting the Senegal government to call for an international investigation into CAF’s integrity.
CAF has appointed its Competitions Director, Samson Adamu, as the Acting General Secretary to stabilise operations during this turbulent period.
Adamu makes history as the first Nigerian to hold this high-ranking position since the organisation’s founding nearly 70 years ago.
He takes over as the governing body awaits a final ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding Senegal’s appeal of the title decision.
