For a CAF president to speak highly of Aboutrika shows how exceptional he was. Mohamed Mohamed Aboutrika was a Grade A midfielder for Al Ahly and Egypt in his playing days.

The 45 year old was born in Nahia-Giza in Egypt. He started his professional career with Tersana in 1997 and joined Al Ahly in 2004. After 9 trophy-laden seasons, the attacking midfielder cum forwad enjoyed a short stint with Baniyas in UAE on a loan deal before retiring in 2013.

The Egyptian super star won many hearts with his performances for the Pharoahs after playing a huge role in their 2006 and 2008 AFCON triumphs.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has disclosed his admiration for the former Egyptian international. “There was a player in Al Ahly named Mohamed Aboutrika, even me being a Sundowns fan, we were all cheering for Mohamed Aboutrika,” Motsepe said.

Football fans across the globe fell in love with Aboutrika’s displays for club and country. Aboutrika was included in CAF Team of the Year on 4 seperate occasions even though he was playing his football on the African continent.
